Quiz Competitions - a way to encourage 'thinking outside the box'
Experiencing the look on pupils faces when they have the ‘ah ha’ moment of solving a question, getting a top spot when they didn’t expect it, and experiencing the adrenaline rush of the rapid fire rounds highlights our team experience during the Extra! current events and spelling quizzes.
We definitely count ourselves lucky to experience first hand the camaraderie and competition pupils bring to these events and our team marvel every year at the level of dedication and academic ability! The 2018 quiz events saw over 1,000 pupils competing and showcasing their skills against other schools in their region. We cannot wait to see the calibre of the schools that the 2019 quizzes will bring!
Quizzes are shown to be a great way of bringing the fun back into learning. Seeing pupils working together to solve questions that they wouldn’t have been able to do themselves is invaluable. Not only do quiz competitions help pupils to develop teamwork skills, but they also mean that pupils learn to think from different angles, communicate their ideas and more generally ‘think outside the box.’
We believe our quiz events are special, not only because they encourage all of the above and more but also because they offer the chance for students to celebrate their academic success.
Our Extra! spelling quizzes consist of 10 exciting rounds including:
All or Nothing
Know your Words
and much more!
The Current Events quiz rounds consist of:
Who am I?
What am I?
New Zealand Places
Around the World Mapping
and much more!
The quizzes are grouped for differing age levels from years 5&6, 7&8, and 9&10. A full membership to our popular Extra! newspapers in education resource enables your school to be eligible to enter teams in the quiz events (to subscribe visit our website here). Teachers can register up to 10 teams of 3 pupils from a school as registration becomes available during the year.
The highly popular and competitive Extra! Current Events and Spelling Quizzes will be hosted in Cromwell, Timaru, Dunedin and Christchurch for 2019. To find our 2019 quiz information and dates click here.
