Issue 1: Digital Citizenship: 28 February 2023.

The world has changed dramatically in recent years and young people are increasingly online. This issue of Extra! Tāpiri will look at what it takes to be a good digital citizen – someone who knows how to respect others and stay safe and happy online.


Issue 2: War and Remembrance – the Second World War at Home: 28 March 2023.

New Zealand civilians were relatively lucky in the Second World War, spared the fighting or the occupation on home soil that many in Europe endured. But for most, life changed. With manpower regulations and fears of invasion, rationing and air raid practices, many felt they were embarking into “the great unknown’’.


Issue 3: The Diversity Issue: 2 May 2023. 

Everyone has their own story to tell, which is impacted by their background, their culture, their upbringing and even the way their mind works. In this issue, we explore the idea that people experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways and that differences are normal.


Issue 4: The Geography Issue - X marks the spot: 23 May 2023.

The world is full of marvellous maps, from those carved into rock by ancient civilisations to the ones used by travellers today. In this issue, we trace the history of maps and recent advances in map-making technology. We also unlock the secret language of maps and explain what those imaginary lines (longitude, latitude and the equator) actually mean.


Issue 5: Our Pacific Neighbours: 20 June 2023.

New Zealand has always had close ties to its Pacific neighbours. In this issue, we explore some of these island nations and the role that Aotearoa has played in the region.


Issue 6: Women in Sport: 18 July 2023.

Kicking off in July, the FIFA Women's World Cup promises to be an exciting event. We take a look at the tournament, which will be played in New Zealand and Australia, and at the wider topic of women in sport.


Issue 7: The Money Issue: 15 August 2023. 

Whether we like it or not, it’s virtually impossible to live our lives without money so knowing about saving, budgeting and borrowing is essential. This issue will introduce the basics of financial literacy and challenge readers with a budgeting activity!


Issue 8: Navigating the Pacific: 12 September 2023

The Pacific was the first ocean to be explored and settled, and its history is one of voyages. In this special Māori Language Week issue, we focus on Polynesian explorers and the extraordinary navigation skills they used to cross the Pacific Ocean.


Issue 9: New Zealand Inventions and Innovators: 17 October 2023. 

From the eggbeater to the disposable syringe, New Zealand has come up with many amazing inventions. We explore some of the best, and the inspiring people behind them.


Issue 10: The Environment Issue – Tackling Waste: 21 November 2023. 

Disposing of our ever-increasing amounts of rubbish produces greenhouse gas emissions, which contributes to climate change. Find out where the waste in your rubbish bin goes, how long it takes to break down and, most importantly, how to minimise waste in the first place.
